El Alegre Burrito

Snapped up on the 'Blad during last year's visit to The Brother in the West Chicago 'burbs.  Although the plaque on the stone thing says 'City of Chicago' so I guess we had crossed some invisible boundary and were now inside the city limits.

Somewhere in the City of Chicago, 2018.  HP5+ on the 'Blad, lith print, Foma paper.

Not a cloud in the sky, as you can see - just heat.  The Brother is acclimatised now, after a quarter of a century living there.  Not me - it was too hot last August and I felt ill most days.  I was fine once I got back home to the cool Irish air where I could breathe again.

  1. And snapped it up pretty darn well you did, with that 'Blad of yours, despite the heat and everything. It's the same with me, once I'm in a warmer climate I only wish to get home to really be able to breath. Strange, but that's what it's like.
I really like that street light pole very nicely placed inside your frame. And shot on HP5+ as well, which makes it a good proof that this film is as versatile as they gets. A lovely print it is for sure!

    1. Thanks Roy. This was one of those shots that grew on me. I thought it was just OK at first so I didn’t bother printing it. But every so often - as you do ;) - I flick through the negative file and I stopped at this one and wondered if it might have something. A very slight crop helped the composition, I think.

  2. I suppose it's because I've always lived here, but I've learned how to cope with hot Augusts. We all have air conditioning in our houses and cars; we just limit being outside.

It's remarkable, however, how often it's cold and rainy on my August birthday. It's a big family joke. Probably 20 times in my life my birthday plans have been scuttled by bad weather!

    1. Ah now come on, Jim. Cold and rainy? In Indiana in August? Seriously? No, it’s OK, I believe you - really! :) I’ve experienced Illinois summer storms and boy they are something else so I know when the weather breaks it can really break.

I sincerely hope you get the sun this year so you&your loved ones can celebrate in style!

  3. The photo looks great. Any close-ups of the stone thing?
I've been in Korea for 25 years(!) and I still haven't gotten used to the summers. Air-conditioning keeps my skin cool, but there is still something oppressive in the air and I don't want to do anything for two months or so.

    1. Thanks Marcus - appreciated! The stone thing, as you so aptly put it, is rather interesting, I agree. Next time I’m on the desktop computer I’ll see if I can zoom in a bit.

My guess is if you haven’t acclimatised after 25 years you’re probably not going to :) It’s no joke that heat if you can’t function. I know we complain here in Ireland about the weather but at least we can do stuff all year round, even if we do need those waterproofs 52 weeks of the year - just in case, y’know ;)
